Replacing seed destroyed by Helene

Hi! I used to post at T'Ville as 'tnpeppers2'. On 9/27, my home AND all of our possessions were completely washed away the waters of the Nolichucky River in the wake of Hurricane Helene. I HAD 38 Earth Boxes on the property primarily dedicated to peppers and tomatoes to feed our sauce and salsa habit. I was going to bail out of any gardening going forward (I am 72.), BUT my wife is dragging me back in. (I think she need to garden and can again to get her mind off of what happened to us...five minutes later, and...

Anyhoo...I am looking for just FIVE varieties of tomato seed (out of the 800 I HAD) to restore our sauce and salsa cravings. Those types would be:

DANIEL BURSON
GEORGE DETSIKA'S ITALIAN RED
MARGARET CURTAIN
MARIA AMAZILITEI'S GIANT RED
MARIANNA'S PEACE

If ANYONE can guide me to a source for these FIVE types to purchase, PLEASE let me know...I will have to have seedlings going by the end of February. Thank you in advance!

Hello @River of Death it's nice to see you on the boards again. I sure am sorry for the devastation that you endured and are probably still going through.

If you PM my your address I can help you out with Daniel Burson and Marianna's Peace. I do have Maria Amazilitei's Giant Red on order but it has not arrived from across the pond yet and since it is coming from there, it may never arrive. Hopefully someone else has it.

I don’t have the varieties you are looking for but am happy to send some tomato and pepper extras your way. If you are interested please send me an address in PM. I can get them out to you in the morning.

May gardening allow you and your wife a break from reality and delicious food in 2025 ❤️

RoD,

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I remember you as tnpeppers at T'ville, not tnpeppers2.

I was likely responsible for a "few" of the 800 varieties in your previous collection. I have Margaret Curtain, and 100s of seeds of George Detsikas Italian Red (2018 seeds, so I'd send a bunch). I'm out of Maria Amazilitei's Giant Red.

(An addiction warning), but if you want a few more varieties, read the MMMM Master List tomatoes.

PM me a mailing address.

The Marianna’s Peace I received from the one of the MMMM swaps is a cross.

There is an MMMM thread for germination and off types, although it is dated for 2022/2023. What did your MP produce?

Here’s the package I started my MP seeds from. Yesterday, I thinned MP to this one plant, but the other one was identical. I’m not planning on transplanting it into the beds when it is time for that.

@River of Death As others, I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm really glad you and the Mrs are getting back to gardening.

You also mentioned peppers. Many of us grow peppers as well, and I think there are some varieties available via MMMM (= @Tormato) also. Are you still looking for those seeds?

Responsible for a "few" of the 800..? I would say so...those swaps were a BLAST! I was 'tnpeppers' for the majority of my tenure at TVille...had to add the '2' towards the end when my account was deleted somehow. I am FOCUSING on tomatoes that produce sauce and salsa with KILLER flavor...we had it narrowed down until the water came calling...watching my beautiful plants sink out of sight was tough. :(

I will PM my address in a bit. Good to hear from you again.

I should have never sent those seeds out. Perhaps I was down to just a few packs, at the time. There is an imposter MP that has been heavily traded. It has rough ribbed shoulders, and poor taste. The true one is not perfect, but much smoother. I tossed all seeds labeled like that.

That was fast...of the five tomato seed requests I posted, the ONLY ONE that remains is MARIA AMAZILIETI'S GIANT RED, which I believe I got from Lee (?) at J&L Gardens out of New Mexico. SIDE NOTE: I knew about Dr. Male, but I read yesterday that Remy from Sample Seed shop had also passed away. (True?) I met her in person at one of Bill Best's swaps in Berea, KY a while back.

No big deal. I should have plenty, more than enough great tomatoes to transplant whenever the time comes. Marianna’s Peace was sort of a late to the party addition and only got my interest piqued after going back through a few old threads on T.Ville. No seed source for tomatoes from my limited experience is 100% guaranteed to be true to form. Certainly not from all of the online vendors. I’ve had off types either way.

It's a big deal to me.

I don't want to see off-types traded, unless the person wants to experiment with that off-type. I could easily perpetuate the spreading of an off-type by sending the wrong seeds to 100+ people over the course of a few years. I figure after about 7 years most seed is no longer viable, and maybe the imposter seeds will go extinct.

And, that is also the reason for the germination part of the germination and off-type thread. I also do not want to send out seeds that do not sprout. If I hear of no germination from a specifically labeled variety, I dump those seeds

And, no, I'm not going to lie, and say that Yellow Pear has both no germination and produces off-types, even though I wouldn't mind if it went extinct.

I still need to send you off a package and I will include this one for you. I had lots of bees the last time that I grew it so fingers crossed that it remained true.
