Last week there was a thread all about appliances and successes and failures. Well, all that nonsense made our twenty year old furnace decide to join the discussion. It has a part, and a very expensive one, that seems to be the first to go and it went. They call it an inducer motor or something like that. When the thermostat says to start the burners, this motor turns on first to be sure that air inside the works can be vented. This tells the burners they can light without putting CO2 into the ductwork. A series of failsafe procedures must be met before the fire starts to warm the house.

Needless to say ours does not meet the safety protocols and we have no heat. The part gets ordered Monday, usually delivered Wednesday (guess what Wednesday is?). So Thursday or Friday delivery, wait for a repair person (maybe Friday or next Monday). With family due to arrive Monday and staying until Thursday we have a portable electric heater in every room of the house. At least the temps are going to be in the forties. I guess we will have to huddle around the heaters.

I've got a small space heater that's next to me now and another one in my bedroom.
It's an oil radiator or some such thing.
Rest of the house is cold.

Years ago this house belonged to my wife's parents. It is the house where she grew up. We purchased it from her mother after her dad passed and her mom went into the nursing home. She grew up with what was called a Morning Heat space heater that was in one room of the house. The rest was unheated. They never had heat in the bedrooms so most of the activity was confined to the kitchen that had a wood burning stove and the dining room/living room that had the big propane space heater.

I remember visiting in winter when the house was as cold as can be. When we bought the house the first thing we did was have central heat and air put in. No problems with heat until yesterday.

Hope you can hang in there until the furnace repair happens! You are lucky it will at least be in the 40's outside. Get out those long johns and wool sweaters! I think the house will be tolerable with all those electric heaters, but I can just imagine what your electric bill will be next month!

Aw turning to space heaters just when expecting guests is tough!

The furnace part arrived Monday afternoon and the HVAC guy called this morning to see if it was convenient for us to get our heat back...absolutely!! was the answer. An hour later the house is warm again. We didn't really even get chilly, but central heat is much better.
