List of all tomato variety names
Has anyone ever attempted to compile a list of the names (and only the names) of all tomato varieties? (I know that's not particularly pracitcal, since they're not all known, and new ones appear all the time, but yeah.)
Anyway, a list like that would be nice, because then I could easily make a random tomato variety name generator.
Of course, you can always go to Tatiana's and hit random page, but I was thinking something more programmatic, with a lot more varieties.

With new tomatoes coming along literally every day. Is a list of all them meaningful? Any moment the list is compiled and finished there’s dozens more to add.
What will become relatively rare are tomatoes with clear or yellow skin and red flesh. The vast majority of tomatoes will be tie dyed, striped, anthocyanin, tricolor, bicolor, multi colored, purple, orange, white, green while ripe or anything but boring red or pink.

That's a huge list. They don't have the Elbonian's on there.Whwoz wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 3:39 am https://localfoodconnect.org.au/communi ... varieties/

It's no wonder that Tatiana gave up trying to keep up her data base. It's a never ending project. It sure was and still is a great resource though.

The pinks will not disappear, although some of them with uninspiring names might. Those who do not taste with their eyes will preserve them.karstopography wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2024 6:50 am With new tomatoes coming along literally every day. Is a list of all them meaningful? What I see is many "older" antho and striped tomatoes no longer circulating widely, as the latest and greatest is released, and growers move on to those. I no longer see about 90% of the "boar" series of varieties. I guess they give new meaning to boring?
Small round red tomatoes might take the biggest hit, of traditional varieties disappearing.

Re: List of all tomato variety names
While I applaud the list keepers, where a person might check if a strange name has been previously circulated, not sure if it has much other use without a bit more information attached, such as color, leaf type, fruit size so that there is a way to verify if the correct type is being grown, or if it's a variety you even want to grow based on description. I wish Tania's Tomatobase could have been offered or donated to a university or other public minded institution that could have kept it free, updated and expanded when it got overwhelming for her. Still a valuable resource.
