Looking for Daniels
Looking for Daniels tomato seeds. It's a pink PL beefsteak. Mine must have gotten a virus in the seed, the plants were abnormal. It's one of my favorites, can anyone help me out?

Re: Looking for Daniels
Marsha--
I have a few Daniels seeds. I haven't grown it yet, but I got the seeds in last year's MMMM swap. If you PM me with your address, I will send five seeds to you...I have a total of 10, and I'd like to keep half for myself!

That's so nice of you, but I can't take them when you only have that few. I think a friend is going to send me some, and I think they are originally from me to her! Thank you for your generous offer.

Patti, I think I'm going to have what I need from a good tomato friend who saw this request. She is actually going to send me back a few of my own seeds from before the newest crop, which went stupid. It's kind of you to offer. Much appreciated.

Daniel's sure sounds nice! I'll put that variety on my list to. I'm a sucker for big fat slicers.

Re: Looking for Daniels
Do you know how to save tomato seed? If so, if you would save me a few, we can do some trading! I'm doing Omar's Lebanese this year.Ginger2778 wrote: βTue Mar 26, 2024 9:11 pmIt's lovely. Yes, I know how to save seed. Sure I'll save you some, but they won't be ready until February of next year. I'm in south Florida, and we start seeds in September to grow in the winter, when it finally gets cool enough for fruit to set.TomatoNut95 wrote: βWed Mar 27, 2024 8:54 amDo you know how to save tomato seed? Re: Looking for Daniels
I'll add that Daniels is a great tasting tomato. And, there is a regular leaf version of it. The RL one was awful in my garden, grown right next to the PL one.

Re: Looking for Daniels
I love the PL one so much. I was so disappointed to see it have a distorted plant growth this season. I grow it every year without fail.

Re: Looking for Daniels
I think that both have been around long enough for them to be considered stable.
As for the RL that I trialed, it could have been a cross, a mixup of seed varieties, something else, or the real Daniels RL. I'll never know, as it was so poor tasting, that I tossed the seeds. I've had the poorest tasting of pink tomatoes show up in the off-type leaf version of a true variety a few times before. I tossed those seeds too.

No, it's stable. Almost a true heirlooom.

@TomatoNut95
I think they just meant there are two stabilized varieties, one RL and one PL. There are a lot of varieties like that. KBX is a potato leaf version of Kellogg's Breakfast, for instance. There's a potato leaf version of Indian Stripe (known as Indian Stripe Potato Leaf). The list goes on. Named varieties like these are not to be confused with random crosses that end up with the wrong leaf type. Granted the named varieties with the different leaf type probably arose from crosses initially, before being stabilized (unless the leaf type mutated or something). So, just because it has mostly the same name and seems a lot like the other one doesn't mean it's actually 100% the same other than leaf type. KBX and Kellogg's Breakfast, for instance, seem to do better in different conditions.

So does anyone know of a reliable commercial source for Daniels ? It's on my bucket list and I need to get some.

If you can wait until next January, I'll have a fresh supply and you can just have some. But you'll need to remind me, no way this old brain will remember.

Re: Looking for Daniels
Sand Hill Preservation has it for $2.25, and you'll probably get a very large number of seeds for the price: https://www.sandhillpreservation.com/pink-tomatoes

"No way this old brain will remember" ....My old brain is probably older than your old brain so you may have to remind me to remind you
