Favorite Cucumbers

My 2 Favourite to grow is space saver, plant seedlings about 2 weeks apart to give us cucumbers all season (4-5 fruits per plant) and Lebanese cucumbers have them setup on a trellis down the side of the house in pots and always get a good harvest from 6 plants thru the season.

This year, in addition to the usual National Pickler I'm going to plant a 6' stretch each of Beit Alpha and the H19 Little Leaf on a trellis as follow-on cukes. That way we'll have some cukes for fresh eating after the Picklers eventually succumb to the funk. No way of avoiding funk down here. it's just a fact of gardening life. Since the H19 has small leaves, I 'm thinking the increased air flow on the trellis might decrease the funk factor.

No more Beit Alpha or Little leaf for use as a secondary cuke. They didn't produce well at all. The new secondary favorite is now Bushy, an OP from Pinetree with 5' vines great for fall. I grew it in one of the used tomato pots and let it climb around the tomato cage. Cukes were about 4-5".

Taurus F1 has grown well for me until last year, which was a bust. I also grew Carosello Leccese light and will grow it again. It's more of the melon type and didn't mind the heat.
I'm going to try Carosello Leccese stripe and grow the light variety again. Not sure what else yet.

Each year I grow Chicago Piclling, Boston Pickling, Russian Pickling, along with some slicer. My quest is to make Claussen dills, and I'm getting close. Beit Alpha is good, Suyo Long is good, Armenian is OK. I'd like to try some mentioned in this thread like Sweet Success, County Fair, and Homemade Pickles.

Silver Slicer did very well for me last year.

I had an interesting experience with Lemon Cucumber. I planted multiple seeds, I don't remember the germination rate but I got about 3 plants for transplanting, and from only one plant survived to produce, but boy howdy that was one productive plant and stayed healthier longer than other cucumber plants I am trying to remember the seed source. Re lemon cukes in general, it is interesting looking cucumber, easy to locate among the foliage and good taste. The downside is it has a big seed cavity and the seeds can be hard if you wait to harvest it.

Poona Kheera is the favorite of things I've tried. They are yellow and then turn brown when ripe. I find harvesting them yellow with the first bits of brown showing up (so you know they aren't going to get much bigger) gives the best flavor and texture. It struggled far longer through last years wave of powdery mildew than anything else. The year before it came back with a vengeance after a couple weeks of being very unhappy while I was beating the whiteflies into submission. Tough and tasty!

This year I'm trying Lemon cucumbers for the first time mostly because I appreciate the ease of finding the Poona Kheera. The size is also great for just using the whole thing at one time, too. We'll see.

I'm ditching last years trial that probably was good for pickling because it was very firm and very bland. (I could go look it up but....) In it's place I'm trying Marketmore 76 as a traditional green slicing cucumber.

I'm also going to try Armenian cucumbers (that are C. Melo) for the first time again. Last year I messed up which spot did not germinate and resowed Poona Kheera in their lone place. I can't say I hated getting more Poona Kheera but I was looking forward to the trial. They seem to be germinating in my test right now so one more time with feeling.

County Fair performed wonderfully for us last year. Previously we’d barely get any cucumbers before the plant succumbed to BW, but County Fair kept going all season till the cold and mildew took it out. Trying Shintokiwa which is also BW-resistant this year as well.
Had an enormous harvest of Suyo as well, till it died from BW.

County Fair is the only one I grow, due to BW, though I have tried others. Little Leaf is the only other one I've found that's resistant, but it did not produce well. I'll be waiting to hear how Shintokiwa does against BW.

Yeah I'm still looking for something that's better than sweet success ! But Ginger2778 commented favorably on Taurus F1. I may have to give it a try.

We also trialed the Wautoma Heirloom Cuke (a WESconsin developed variety! https://www.azurestandard.com/shop/prod ... anic/15712), and it did well enough to make into our permanent Cuke Rotation!
