Re: 2024 Monster Mater Madness
We now have two categories for the Monster Mater Madness. One for the big so called ugly tomatoes and the other for their prettier friends. I'm not so sure that I agree on the segregation, big is big. So it goes.

@Tormato Man that would be one nasty sunburn! Piece of orange flagging tape, pollinated that fruit with one of the wild crosses.

Re: 2024 Monster Mater Madness
The first lot won of the World Class Pumpkin seeds has arrived. It's getting late and I'm sure that many of you are waiting for them. Since there are only 4-5 seeds from each tomato, I find it hard to distribute them fairly. They all have an amazing pedigree. Do not feel slighted if your seed comes from a lessor weight tomato. From looking at the genealogy, most of the records have been grown from a lessor weight tomato. In fact, most of these lessor seeds are from the same tomato that did produce the state record fruit.
So how we will do this is that I will bag 1 seed per bag and give each tomato it's own number. All seeds from that tomato will be given the same number. There will be 3-4 bags for each tomato. Each of you can choose three numbers #1-6 for now. If you want to wait a few more days I will add more when the next lot arrives and let you know when I do that. I will include your seeds with the other varieties that you have chosen. So please let me know which World Class #'s you want to place your bets on and add to your stable.
These seeds were expensive so, if you request them, then I ask that you return the first 20 seeds from your largest tomato off of each plant. Even if you manage to get the next world record, those first seeds come back to the Junction. You can sell the rest or whatever you would like to do with them.
I will post a chart of the tomatoes so that you will know your seeds origins and pedigree.
I will also say that the seeds labeled as "Big Lou" are a Domingo cross by Dan Sutherland who is the master of growing the giant tomatoes. He has grown more world records than anyone else. The problem is, I don't know which cross that is because my plant was not labeled.

Re: 2024 Monster Mater Madness
Seeds will start going out tomorrow. I will PM you so that you know that they are on the way.
I have labeled the giant tomatoes from the auction in the manner that the competitors do. This is not the way that we are accustomed to.
1st is weight of the mother tomato
2nd the growers last name
3rd the year grown
4th the weight of the parent of the tomato grown
5th the last name of the grower and it's pollinator
6th the variety of the seed if known
The highlighted seed above means that this seed came from an 11.65lb tomato grown by Faust in 2022. The 11.65 seed came from a tomato weighing 9.06lbs, grown by Brown and open pollinated. This does not list the variety but I happen to know that the 9.06 is a Domingo. If the variety is listed I will list it. If I know the parents variety then I will list it as well.
The above is an example of a lot. This is not the one that I purchased. I would like you to note that the 5lb tomatoes at the bottom were produced by a very large tomato. From watching how this works, I suspect that the next generation from these seeds will be very very good.

My limited experience from last year says your husband is sunk, Domingo and BZ seem much more likely to throw giants, but I guess all it takes is one megabloom…

I don't know, but they just might have a few more choices. Maybe the dog and the cat can each grow one.AKgardener wrote: ↑Mon Feb 26, 2024 8:13 pm We’ll because I decided to do the big tomato my husband decided as well as my daughter Wich neither of them have grown maters have decided to go up against mine.. haha hubby has westlund my daughter has big zac I have Domingo.. this will be interesting

Re: 2024 Monster Mater Madness
Here is a brand new video by Dan Sutherland, grower of the 17lb tomato. The link won't work but it is on YouTube and titled, 'Favorite Tomato Varieties 2024|World Record Gardener's Best Heirloom Beefsteak Tomatoes|Growing Tips'. It has some great tips and perhaps you can beg some seeds from him. He is selling them for $1.00 each. Get a few to share while you are asking. (Hint, hint)
