Or at least the two stores near me have stopped stocking it. This stinks.

I wouldn't panic. Where I am they don't restock ProMix at all until growing season start. Their brand page is still on Menards website. I'm going to start reusing mixes though, peat moss has increased so much in price.

The store employees told me it wasn't coming back, and it is usually here by now. That isn't completely infallible, but it doesn't look good.

I have had good results reusing mix in outdoor containers, after the old roots get a chance to dry rot and compost. I hesitate to bring it inside, though. I get weed seeds and an occasional snail.

Oh no. My Brew and Grow store, which was another source for it, has closed too. I will have to try to find something else.

I have been a user of ProMix BX for 5 or 6 years now and I buy it in 3.8 cu ft bales to fill my grow bags with. The price keeps going up every year. Last year the place where I buy it also had the Lambert brands of growing mixes. I noticed that the price was $5-$6 dollars less than ProMix BX for a 3.8 cu ft. bale so I picked up 2 bales to try for my pepper plants. And I have to say that the results were excellent. My 6 pepper plants produced abundantly in their grow bags with most of the plants producing 40 peppers or more each. I think this year I'll try a couple of my tomato plants in bags with this Lambert mix so I can compare it to the ones in ProMix. FWIW

I asked the Menards FB page and they confirmed that the ProMix is being discontinued :( They're going to start carrying SunGro Sunshine Mix #4 as an alternative but it's not available at most places yet and they said it won't start being more available until later this month. Listed at 17.99 for 2cu ft. https://www.menards.com/main/outdoors/g ... 034794.htm

Thanks for that update.

The discontinued product was $20 ($15 last year and previous) for what expanded to be 4 cubic feet. So in two years the price for that 4 ft has gone from $15 to $36 :(

Yes the price of peat moss has increased a lot hence potting mix by extension got more expensive.

Just checked Menards and there is no Promix in sight, they replaced it with Sunshine, and not cheap. And I want to know what exactly is Sunshine's ingredient "Long-Lasting Wetting Agent".

I don't find True Value in my area but it seem they are replaced with Zettler Hardware. I'm assuming they don't have Promix in stock locally, but their website have Promix which can be shipped to the store, I will try this sometime in the future.

I checked amazon and the bale of pro mix that was $15 two years ago at Menards is $50.

Wal Mart might have something soon, who knows what price.

The last few years walmart had pro mix. I tihnk BX. The price was not terrible, I just didn't feel I needed it. Haven't seen it this year. Was just there, still not in. Checked the website, they list 4 pro mix types for order only, 3+day shipping, and nothing at all listed in stores.

I'm thinking it is the same as with Menard's, they aren't getting it this year?

***edit website had 4 showing plus 105 other hits that I didn't notice the arrow for...but I don't see what they were selling before.

My nearest Lowes has Sunshine Mix #4. 3 compressed cubic feet for $35. It seems to have more perlite and the peat in it is finer, more like peat dust. I was able to fill six 5 gallon felt pots with one bag.

I use HP for my Earthboxes. Cannot find it anywhere in the Bay Area.

Any suggestions for an alternative?

From the specs on the manufacturer's website, it looks like Pro-Mix HP and Pro-Mix BX have exactly the same ingredients, except HP has a higher amount of perlite. So, if you get Pro-Mix BX and a bag of perlite, you'll be all set.

Ace Hardware has the large compressed bale (3.8 cu. ft.; 60 lbs) of Pro-Mix BX with biofungicide & mycorrhizae for $59.99, and if you're a rewards member or are willing to become one, it's pretty easy to get at least a $5 off coupon. You can order it on the Ace website and have it shipped to your nearest Ace store for free. If you visit your local Ace store, you might even be able to get them to order the HP for you from their distributor.

The Pro-Mix manufacturer's website lists a few hydroponics stores in the Bay Area and near-ish that carry their products, though not necessarily HP -- Oakland, San Jose, San Leandro, Petaluma.

Ace website for my local store says $57 for that. I checked because I had a feeling it would vary by location.
$57 at ACE, 7 mile drive. But they will ship for that price since it is over $50.
$33.40 at Nolts greenhouse down near Ephrata (a solid hour drive). But you see some horse and buggies, so it can be a fun trip, if you make it an event.

If you can a garden supply or greenhouse supply nearby, that doesn't require wholesale buys, that is the place to go rather than a big box.

That $33.40 is an amazing price; thanks for mentioning Nolt's. I've downloaded their catalog and will check them out. It's a fun trip from here to PA Dutch Country.

The 3.8 cu. ft. compressed bales are $99.95 this year at my local independent nursery/garden center, which is why I was so happy to find them at Ace for $59.99. The $99.95 place should just call themselves "Wealthy People Garden Center" for truth in advertising and to keep away the riffraff like me. There's one competitor about a mile further out the highway, but the owners are so miserably crabby and sometimes bizarrely hostile that it's kind of frightening to go there, not worth it when the prices are only slightly lower anyway.
