Re: Winter's a'Coming!
While isolated pockets of relative sanity remain, the ongoing...um...body of work suggests otherwise; to wit:
This Burg came within on CommonSenseLess Council vote of renaming Bassett St. (former resident of note: **The Gotch!) Ho Chi Minh Trail back in the '70s, and its official City Bird is the Plastic Pink Flamingo.
Heck, I even went so far as to...um...craft its official song:
77 Square Miles Surrounded By A Sea Of Reality Anthem (to the tune of Star Spangled Banner)
*Oh How Proud We Must Be…Of Our Mid West Berk Ley
What so Smugly We Hail…Grand Ideas That Just Fail
You Can’t Spit And Can’t Smoke…Don’t Think This Is A Joke
We Applaud Our Free Speech…Lest It’s Something We Don’t Preach
ProPerTee Tax So High…We Just Sit Down And Cry
Politically Correct…If Not You Are Suspect
New Business We e Abhor…We JuuUh Uh St Show Them the Door
Unless They Are for…Inane Things We Adore.
*Pressing Priority…One More Sister City
Ride Bikes On Bike Paths…Or You Will Incur Our Wrath
Mandatory Sick Leave…Failed And Surely We Grieve
If We Come Up Short…We Are Not such A Good Sport
When WE Needed Money… Goodman’s, Jerry Frautschi
They Gave Us A Bunch…We Messed Up That Free Lunch
Much Pomp But Not Much Substance…And Per Er Pe Eh Tual Offense
Common Council Yes We Have…Just Not Much Common Sense
*Mayor Dave Kisses Feet…Of The Lefty Elite
They Back Some Dumb Rules…Follow Them Or Be Thought Fools
Roof Rain Gardens and More…Co-op Grocery Stores
We Are All Very Green…To the FAR LEFT We Lean
We All Do LUV Al Gore…Tolerance We Are For
But If You Lean Right…Then You We DO Deplore
But When Push Comes To Shove, We Don’t Know What We’re Made Of
It’s A City Where We Live…And A City We LUV

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
winter may be coming, but it is supposed to get to 46 degrees tomorrow.
this morning it was in the teens, but it has improved since then.
i like pink flamingos. i suggested to church members that they should put a bunch in their
back yard to encourage their neighbor to rebuild a fence.

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
There is still a gasp of fall left here in eastern Nebraska, at least in the city.
The weather station reports our inch soil temp is hovering at 41-42 degrees F with temp swings similar to what RX Keith described.
An installer arrived at my country place to screw down augers for a new wood shed, and after traveling 3 hours, he found the ground was already frozen solid. We were both in disbelief with the warm days we've been having. The trip was not wasted as he sealed up a half inch plus gap by the side of one of the doors. The new shed would have made a luxury hotel for critters over winter.

as part of the tradition, I have to move the lawn mowers and snowblower to get the snowblower closer to the garage door.

@Cornelius_Gotchberg That looks like a little gingerbread house waiting for the candies to be put on top.
That's a far cry from what I woke up to. Just a little mist of a rain with a this coating of ice on the ground. It was all gone in an hour.

Much like the universally known level of...um...discomfort when walking into increasingly deep, icy cold water, that concept is known only to Y-Chromosomal Units...

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
Yes, they know about shrinkage, as in a reduction of...um...surface area.
I was referencing a LEVEL of discomfort caused by one's initial...er...pelvic area contact with freezing water.
It's entirely possible it's a regional euphemism.
FWIW, I've been in the Pacific Ocean in Alaska, but never in colder water than Lake Superior in June!
How cold was it? It "shocked" ear wax so deeply into my ear canals that I had to have it surgically removed...on several occasions!
