Re: Winter's a'Coming!
Yup! We're getting 2-4" here today in fact. I'll be out with the snow blower later, no doubt about it, because it's the wet & heavy stuff too. At least last time was light & fluffy but not today. Sigh.

@JayneR13 what does it take to shut things down due to snow in your area? In DC a light sprinkle causes major panic and everyone gets a snow day.

Nowhere near that here, most of it melted on its own (we face south); my favorite kinda snowfall!
I just had to shovel a little patch on the driveway apron down which took ~ three (3) minutes, if that.
'Course, yer well north of us...

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
@Cranraspberry as Gotch says: a helluva lot less than it used to! These days it seems as though two snowflakes on the same road is enough. Seriously, a good 6"+ storm during commute time will usually do it. I can see why. The roads are lousy and the best gift I can give first responders is to stay home and out of trouble.
@Cornelius_Gotchberg I had to shovel my entire corner lot, and it was the wet & heavy stuff too. Just enough that I had to shovel but not enough that I could use the blower. Of course the blower doesn't really like that wet & heavy stuff anyway. It clogs the chute quickly, among other things.

I found a dandelion growing by the garage door today.
I swear weeds are getting tougher every year.

Ahhh.... we are white covered again since this afternoon, with a few more cm expected overnight it might be enough to shovel.
I went out in the so-silent and windless snow, and finally took out the tree that blew down in one of our recent gales, a just in case it piles up and decides to go nowhere for awhile. Knowing us, maybe a LONGISH while.

We're forecast to hit 50F this week, then the possibility of several inches of snow over the weekend. It's winter, all right!

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
it takes more than a few snow flakes to shut things down here. school isn't cancelled because of a few inches of snow.
six, eight inches or more, maybe different story. roads have to be plowed first. some times there is a school delay.
snow days happen when the snow is falling fast, visibility is poor or conditions will deteriorate during the day. you will
almost always see people out and about during bad storms here. they just shrug it off. i have driven to and from work in
white out conditions before. i don't live far from work, but it is unnerving when you can't see much past the front of your car.
only one day in four years with the current company i work for, that we were closed due to snow. another year, with a former
employer, the store had to close because gale force winds was blowing snow into vents in the roof, and clogging them up. we
walked into the store in the morning, and could smell gas. NEVER, a good sign.
when the plows get pulled off the road due to hazardous conditions, you should be off the road too or you may find yourself OFF
the road. knowwhatimean.

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
awwwww, the gotch just had a little trouble with navigation is all.
not uncommon for newcomers to the area. summer season, a whole
secondary network of seasonal roads, two tracks, and logging roads open up that you
can explore or get lost on. the gotch didn't stray too far off course.
no snow in august, although someone was saying just yesterday at the store that there was a fourth of july
one year where there was some snow flakes seen.

@rxkeith ; The Gotch (no stranger to roads less traveled and with an uncommon natural compass and NO GPS) only had trouble because many of them there Keweenaw Peninsula...um...thoroughfares aren't marked.
Snowfall? Iron County (which more than holds its own with U.P. snowfalls!) is the only WESconsin county that has had snowfall in every month of the year. https://www.hurleywi.com/wp-content/upl ... -final.pdf

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
Back in the day, the roads would have to be completely impassible before they ever considered closing anything. Public safety just didn't seem to be a priority, or the risks weren't really considered too serious, just a regular part of life. Maybe that changed as vehicles changed and speed limits were bumped up so high for the highways. A lot more dangerous. And kids in schoolbuses aren't wearing seatbelts so.. yeah once on a time there were no seatbelts either.
Snow without wind here - more up top than on the ground. Shovel out, then wait for the second half to drop. I'm alright with that, as long as it doesn't decide to drop down the back of my neck while I'm at it! We are stuck at -3C today but I see a warmup forecast for the weekend...

One of the LEAST enjoyable aspects of the Winter Wonderland; even with a Hoodie/Hooded Parka, that stuff just seems to find it's way in, am I right?

70 degrees(21˚C) forecast for today and tomorrow. But Friday brings snow and cold temps. Time to enjoy a few more days of Fall weather!
@Cornelius_Gotchberg I read that a few other states have contests to name their snowplows. Does Wisconsin?

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
@Cornelius_Gotchberg Parkas always come with a hood, but I seldom put it over my head, because TBH it blocks your sight and hearing, both of which are crucial in the woods eg when cutting a few sticks. So I don't like hoods, I always wear a toque or other hat that doesn't block the view. We rarely get temperatures so low here that you'd be better off wearing it, and if or when we do, I pretty much stay in out of it unless absolutely must.
After a plenty experience, I've come to the conclusion that the true purpose of the hood is to invite those snowy boughs above to dump forth and score a basket. There's usually a bit to slide right down your neck on the side. Not my favorite!

They include, but aren't limited to:
*Dolly Plowton is the only dual-wing plow in the fleet.
*Saltimus Prime is used to apply saltwater brine to streets before a snowstorm hits.
*Seymour Pavement is a loader with a plow blade and wing attachments.
*Snowbi Wan Kenobi removes snow from bike paths and other areas.

Re: Winter's a'Coming!
@bower ; FWIW, all my parkas have zip hoods.
And the most I have to worry about while knocking heavy snow off'n the Arbor Vitaes or roof raking is the neighbors' dogs sneaking up on me...or it being too deep and cascading into the boots covering my sometimes sockless feet, which I will unequivocally attest is a damn sight worse than down my back!
